Watchers

"Watchers"

Watercolor on paper, 8 Jul. 2004

While watching a sport event, a concert, etc., sometimes the TV cameras focus on the crowd, at some individual faces staring in awe to whatever is going on in front of them. It's an interesting fact that watching those faces you also become more involved with the spectacle, by sympathy and empathy, and somehow the show becomes more meaningful for you.

Faces, people, is what actually our world is made of. People is what gives meaning to our lives, and hence human relations is the only thing that really matters in the end.

I made these anonymous faces as part of larger unfinished (euphemism for failed) project, investigating the dramatic effects of zenithal lighting on human bodies. These are made with single brush strokes directly on the paper, without sketching, similar to traditional Chinese paints and writing.
